ReMoved - A Short Film on Foster Care
The short film, “ReMoved,” is based on the many similar cases of children in the foster care system. The creator of the film, Nathanael Matanick, was inspired to create a film representing the broken lives of foster children moved from home to home. He and his wife dreamed up this eye-opening film while they themselves were in training to be foster parents. Matanick explains, “We made ReMoved with the desire that it would be used to serve in bringing awareness, encourage, and be useful in foster parent training, and raising up foster parents.”
The film itself has inspired all of what Matanick hoped it would, with over 250,000 views online in the first week. It has brought tears to viewers’ eyes and sorrowful caring into the hearts of those who watch the heart-wrenching story. The emotions brought forward from the film are outstanding.
One of the elements of the film that stood out greatly to the Case for Character Team was that Matanick made sure to add one of the most devastating things into the film: trash bags. When foster kids are moved out of their homes, when they move from placement to placement, and when they go to visit family on weekends or for holidays, they are often times given simply a small trash bag to pack their belongings in. The film highlighted that unfortunate truth whenever the little girl was transferred to a new location.
In the last scene, where the little girl overhears her new foster parent talking to the social worker, the girl then runs to her room where she pulls out her trash bag to start packing her things. Watching this broke my heart. She associated trash bags with moving and therefore associated trash bags with the rightful place for her belongings.
A Case for Character wants to change that situation. We want to be able to provide foster children with a brand new suitcase to call their own. No more stuffing belongings into ripped and torn trash bags. We may not be able to prevent how many times a child moves, but we can at least bring back their dignity. Giving a child a place for their belongings, in some ways, is giving them a ‘house.’
No one deserves to carry their belongings in a trash bag. Why should these children have to?
